Behind the Data: The who, what, where, when, and why behind the data

Who: The Year in Review report is authored by illion’s Head of Analytics, Louis Tsang, with data analysis compiled by Analytics & Insights Managers Justin Moy and Michael Johnson.

What:The analysis and data are sourced from illion’s extensive data assets:

  • Commercial Trade Bureau:
The trade bureau provides insights into payment transactions between businesses and suppliers, highlighting instances where companies exceed agreed payment terms. Combined with other commercial information on Australian and New Zealand companies, illion offers some of the industry’s top-performing risk scores and indexes.
  • Other Commercial Attributes:
illion possesses one of the most comprehensive databases of industry classifications for Australian and New Zealand businesses. When combined with key attributes such as business age, business size, and risk scores, these data points deliver valuable insights.
  • Consumer Bureau:
The report leverages account opening and repayment history data from illion’s comprehensive credit reporting dataset.
  • Spend Analytics Database: illion has access to a broad range of consumer spending data. This dataset enables observation of high-level spending patterns and trends over time.

Where & When: The report focuses on Australia and New Zealand across both consumer and commercial domains. In 2023, significant deterioration was observed in key metrics, including consumer delinquencies and commercial late payments. While some of these risks persist in 2024, many are beginning to stabilise.

Why: Monitoring the risk metrics available through illion’s bureau is essential for identifying hidden risks. These insights empower you to manage your portfolios more effectively and proactively.
